When this popped up in my eMail just this past Friday, I couldn't wait to see if Stowe made the list. It was! Read on...

"Summertime in the mountains is in full swing, and Curbed Ski is celebrating by releasing a brand-new edition of our Hotel 38 map, our answer to the question, "Where should I stay in ski country?" Whether you use this list to make your 2016 ski plans or to book a summer getaway, we've curated the top ski town hotels from east to west, from Stowe to Tahoe, and all the way north to Whistler. While largely of the luxurious nature, we've also made sure to include a range, from classic top-notch hotels like the The Little Nell, to boutique spots like Telluride's Lumiere, and to B&B's loaded with personality like Whitefish's Garden Wall Inn and Vermont's Pitcher Inn. In this edition, we've cut Alta's Rustler Lodge in favor of Sun Valley's newly renovated Sun Valley Lodge. And while we love the Goldener Hirsch Inn in Park City, we've chosen to refresh the list with the gorgeous St. Regis Deer Valley Resort. Nonetheless, there was Stowe Mountain Lodge, at #3! "When it opened in 2008 with 300 guest rooms, the Stowe Mountain Lodge brought the full-service amenities of a resort hotel more commonly found at Western ski areas back to New England, including the hotel’s alpine cabin architecture, stone-framed fireplaces, top-notch service including ski, golf, and fly-fishing “sherpas,” loaner Mercedes, and stellar outdoor pool and hot tub. Its success has been enough to garner the attention of National Geographic and more than a few other publications."

Winter rules for the 20% of Stowe’s visitors who come from Canada during snow season.

With Porter Airlines’ service beginning Dec. 15 for twice-weekly flights from Toronto to Burlington, Vermont, Ontario snow sports fans have many new options for skiing and snowboarding at top resorts such as Stowe. During February and March, Porter will expand to four flights weekly.

Vermont’s snow-sports areas have precious powder days, major steeps and jumps and snow-bunny fun. But destinations such as Stowe have total tourism cred off-mountain, too. Visitors can get stoked for artisan-inspired gourmet cuisine, New England warmth and rockin’ après-sports with dozens of local brews like Long Trail and maple martinis gently stirred with Vermont Spirits craft vodka.

On-mountain, snowmaking and snowboarding are trending at Stowe Mountain Resort, the most sophisticated vacation development in northeastern U.S.A., during any season.

Novices also have a new option — an extra-long, covered Magic Carpet surface lift on mellow Spruce Peak. Stowe also has invested $8-million recently in snowmaking — that’s almost 10 times more than any other New England resort — to create a high-efficiency, eco-conscious system that makes more white stuff while using less energy.

Park sharks will love the rails and boxes of the new Jib Nation on Lower North Slope, plus and the expanded freestyle features on Lower Standard, in addition to the biggest jumps on Tyro. Home of Burton Snowboards, Stowe has a Burton High Performance Demo Centre and a full complement of Burton programs.

Deals abound. You can sharpen your game with Stowe for Starters which includes a lift ticket and two 90-minute snow-school sessions — that’s almost all-day learning, for $162 U.S. p.p. The swish Stowe Mountain Lodge has handsome condos, a heated outdoor swimming pool, fine dining and a lavish spa. The Ski and Stay Package starts at $361 U.S. per day, for two people in a studio, or $557 for four in a one-bedroom suite.

When you unbuckle, Stowe’s essential experience includes contemporary American cuisine at Solstice in the Stowe Mountain Lodge, a visit to the Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum and an evening at the Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center. Considering that Stowe is a vintage village with about 5,000 permanent residents, the line-up is jaw-dropping and includes Warren Miller’s dazzling downhill film, Ticket to Ride, capturing incredible snow thrills in Kazakhstan and Iceland, Dec. 29 and the Rudolf Nureyev State Ballet Theatre of Russia staging The Sleeping Beauty, Feb. 1.

Tuesday Evening at Stowe Mountain Lodge

This past Tuesday evening, Spruce Peak at Stowe, Stowe Mountain Resort, and Chittenden Bank hosted the Lamoille Area Board of Realtors annual holiday reception at Stowe Mountain Lodge. It was held in #506, one of the Front Four Private Residence Club 4-bedroom fractionals – a 2-story, at about 3,200 square feet, spacious home away from home! Hors d'oevres, created by Lodge executive chef Sean Buchanan, came from his Solstice kitchen included duck and salmon canapés, a tasty assortment of cheeses, and shrimp cocktail with several dipping sauces from which to choose, including simple horseradish.

As much fun as 50 or more realtors can have at a party, the real surprise presented itself when, upon leaving, we found a party, going full-swing, in the lobby, with crackling fires in its 2 massive fireplaces. It was straight out of the 1954 Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, and Dean Jagger classic, "White Christmas!" The lobby was overflowing with guests listening to and singing Christmas carols accompanied by a talented player at the lobby piano. The scene and the sounds were captivating – we really didn't want to leave. Here are a few iPhone photos that don't begin to do the evening justice:

Solstice restaurant sign wins national award

Solstice Restaurant in Stowe Mountain Lodge A leading national sign industry source magazine, Sign Business, showcased Wood & Wood, Inc. of Waitsfield, VT with an honorable mention award for the design and fabrication of the interior Solstice restaurant ID sign in the 16th Annual Portfolio Sign Design Contest. This understated steel sign was one of many signature signs designed by Sparky Potter, owner of Wood & Wood Inc., to compliment the rustic, alpine architecture of the five-star Stowe Mountain Lodge. For this award-winning sign project, Potter and his team of craftspeople used a unique combination of eco-friendly fabrication techniques, including artistically painting the water-jet cut aluminum letters, accenting the corners with steel acorn nuts and installing amber LED lights on the sign back to cast a halo glow on to the natural stone wall. A Winter of Firsts

The 'vision comes to life' as Stowe Mountain Lodge, which opened this past summer, begins its first winter. Spruce Camp, the new, and wildly anticipated base lodge, opened last Saturday. It is "central services" for skiers and snowboarders, with ticketing, rentals, a restaurant/food court, a bar, event spaces, public lounge area, FREE locker use, and indoor and outdoor fireplaces. A Little Holiday Cheer From Kim Lambrechts

Kim is Stowe Mountain Lodge's Director of Food & Beverage. He moved to Stowe from the Maldives where he spent a year as the director of food and beverage at the Four Seasons Resort Maldives. I met Kim shortly after he arrived at the Lodge and watched as he and Executive Chef Sean Buchanan, planned, organized, recruited, and built a culinary gem at the top of the Mountain Road.

Earlier this week, I asked Kim to whip up a little holiday cheer for you and here it is -- Enjoy!:

Front Four Maple-Chili-Tini

Ingredients 3 oz of Sunshine Vodka 2 Tablespoons of Vermont Maple Syrup 1 Teaspoon of Finely Chopped Habanero Chili 1 Tablespoon of Fresh Squeezed Lime Juice 4 cubes of Ice

Best Practice Infuse the vodka with the chili and let it sit for about 10 minutes to extract the natural flavor. In a shaker combine the ingredients, shake well.
