Today, December 14th, I began my 9th season at a ski patroller at Stowe Mountain Resort. Once on the hill with my fellow patrollers, it felt as natural as an uninterrupted continuation from my last day, last season. Here's a panoramic photo I stitched together from 2 photos I took this afternoon:
Yes, it's true: the Mountain got a dumpload of snow for its once-postponed 2011-2012 season opening day. 8-10 inches of powder made for a snowy first day of the new season! It continues to snow lightly and the forecast calls for snow to taper to flurries by noontime. The brand new FourRunner Quad opened at 8 and is providing top-to-bottom skiing & riding today. Open trails include Upper Lord, Lord, Upper Ridgeview, Ridgeview, North Slope, Lower North Slope & Centerline for a total of 2.6 miles and over 2,000 vertical feet of terrain. All the terrain has been groomed with the exception of Centerline. There are also two terrain features set-up on Ridgeview. Snowmaking is currently in progress on upper Lord, Lord, and Ridgeview.
Here's what I had to dig out this morning
Stowe Village upon arrival this morning
Fran and I toured the Dream Home at Stowe Mountain Resort this afternoon. It was designed by architect Paul Robert Rouselle, and built by Brendan O'Reilly, owner of Stowe's Gristmill Builders. The tour price-of-admission benefits Mt. Mansfield Winter Academy.
With the winner's identity having been leaked earlier this week, it felt a bit wierd knowing in whose home we were together with a bunch of strangers, without the new owner who doesn't know any of us. I'm sure you've seen the home on HGTV and an abundance of photos taken by the more than 2,000 visitors who've already toured it.

I worked on the Mountain for the last three days. We got 14"+ powder dump on Tuesday night into Wednesday that gave us silky-smooth first tracks in powder above our knees. It was spectacular. Unfortunately, it was overcast and with the snowfall continuing, I didn't get any photos until today. Hope you didn't miss it!
