Foreigners Snap Up Properties in the U.S.

From the Wall Street Journal REAL ESTATE | Updated June 12, 2012, 12:08 p.m. ET

The six-year slide in U.S. home prices and the dollar's weakness against some currencies are driving a property-buying binge by Asians, Canadians, Europeans and Latin Americans eager to own a piece of America.          **VIDEO**

Plowing money into real estate may sound like a risky venture to many Americans. But to growing numbers of foreigners, U.S. housing has never seemed a smarter investment.

International buyers accounted for $82.5 billion, or 8.9%, of the $928 billion spent on residential real estate in the 12-month period that ended in March, according a survey released Monday by the National Association of Realtors. That was up 24% from $66.4 billion in the previous-year period.

The survey showed that about 55% of all international buyers came from five countries: Canada, China, Mexico, India and the United Kingdom. Five states, meanwhile, accounted for around 55% of all sales to international buyers: Florida, California, Texas, Arizona, and New York. The survey found that 62% of international buyers paid in cash.

Virgin America pays tribute to Steve Jobs with jet name

Apropos nothing real estate; and, only because I'm a long-time Apple addict, I'm posting this story about Virgin America having just named one of its new Airbus A320's in a tribute to Steve Jobs. You can read the complete story here.

Steve Jobs

My first computer was an Apple II -- I've been an Apple fan ever since. And, I've never purchased a computer that wasn't an Apple. I use a MacBook at home and at work. My entire career prior to real estate was in technology marketing. Technology, education, business, and industry, together with consumers worldwide have lost a one-of-a-kind visionary.

Catching up...

Ok... I'm so far behind, I'll start with an update here, then I'll catch up with everything since the beginning of February.

  • See my knee update here
  • 'll post a bunch of photos I took since February 3rd
  • During the entire month of March, I spent every Tuesday and Thursday evening, after patrolling all day, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., in an EMT refresher class
  • I continued working with and showing homes and land to many of my real-estate clients
  • My 7th season as a ski patroller ended last Thursday, March 25th
  • Last Saturday evening, my wife, Fran, and I attended the Mt. Mansfield Ski Patrol 75th Anniversary Celebration at Spruce Camp at Stowe Mountain Resort. More than 300 people were there, including most of the current and past patrollers from 30 to 40 or more years ago! More here.
  • I took my EMT recertification exam (written and practicals), with many of my fellow patrollers, this past Monday, March 29th
  • I received my Happy Letter from VT EMS yesterday -- I passed with a score of 87%. My EMT license is now valid for another 2 years, until the end of February 2012
  • I'm now going to focus my time exclusively on local-area real estate.

Congratulations to Joe Lichtenberg!

Joe Lichtenberg, from the Boston area and a frequent visitor to Stowe, won the voucher for a one-day lift ticket at Stowe Mountain Resort.

There were no entries (yikes!) for the 50% off one adult one-day lift ticket for Vermont residents. So, if you live in Vermont, you can still win this voucher. See the original post here, and get your entry in by 3:30 p.m., Friday, March 20th -- the first day of Spring!

And, while I've been a Vermont licensed real-estate salesperson for some time, I am now also a member of the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® and subscribe to its strict Code of Ethics.

Stowe Patrol is now "LIVE!"

I was, until the close-of-business today, the real-estate marketing manager at Spruce Peak at Stowe Mountain Resort for the past year and a half. I am, now a freelance blogger, marketer, and licensed real-estate salesperson. The purpose of this blog hasn't changed (see the first post.)

Now, in addition to writing about everything Stowe; and, if you're interested in buying a vacation- or second-home here, I'd like to tell you specifically about ownership opportunities at Spruce Peak at Stowe Mountain Resort. I can help, too, with more general real-estate information in Stowe, Hyde Park, Morrisville. Please leave a comment or send me an eMail at charlie at experience dot com.
